Blue Into Rust
Hydrangeas don't fade the way other flowers do. As they dry, their colour doesn't dim — it becomes something else entirely.
This is not a celebration of bloom. It's a record of what comes after — the part most flowers don't get remembered for. Everyone looks at a flower in full bloom. Almost no one looks closely at what it becomes once the attention moves on.
This hydrangea is split between two colours that don't belong to the same story. One half is still the deep, saturated blue it was at its most whole. The other half has worn into a dusty wine-rust — the colour of something spent, not destroyed. Like a relationship that once held close and slowly grew its cracks: colour going mottled, brilliance fading, while the shape itself never breaks apart. Nothing here has been erased. It has simply stopped being radiant.
Look closer at the rust-coloured half, and the petals have curled at the edges like small wings — closer to a flock of butterflies caught mid-flight than to anything fading. Even here, there's a kind of motion that hasn't finished yet.
This piece sits heavier than the others in the series — closer to looking back than looking forward. Some endings don't need to be resolved to be worth keeping. The ache doesn't have to disappear to matter; it's a kind of memory too.
This print is not just a limited edition — it's a position within an ongoing study. Threshold of Decay is an open-ended visual research project at Verweile Studio, and every print carries a number that marks a specific place in its sequence, not just a print count.
When you take one of these five, your name (if you'd like it there) is recorded in the studio's collector register — not a transaction, but part of how this project is documented. You're welcome to write back and tell us which half you find yourself drawn to, or ask about a bespoke variation made just for you.
Each size in which this piece is offered is limited to five prints. Once a size finds its five people, that particular size closes — the study continues in whichever sizes remain.
